Article: Falling Asleep

April 14, 2009

  • Your bed is a sancutary; it should only be used for sleep, not anything else. No homework, reading, writing, eating, etc.
  • Your body runs on a cycle. Try to stick to it as much as possible. This includes eating around the same time every day.
  • Do not eat at least two hours before you sleep; digesting will keep you up.
  • Do not exercise at least three hours before you sleep; your heart rate and blood flow has increased and takes time to slow down back to normal pace; it will keep you up.
  • Try not to worry about anything.
  • Breathe slower; it tricks the brain to thinking you're sleeping.
  • Females - your menstrual cycle changes sleep a bit; during your period you tend to be more fidgetdy.

My 2cents on sleeping pills: do not use unless you have spoken to your doctor about it. The body undergoes habituation--meaning, it gets used to using certain drugs and you may end up requiring a higher dosage or relying on them to fall asleep instead of your body functioning naturally.
